Felix Saldanha son of Salvador Saldanha married Mornel Bai daughter of Belagal (Falnir) Kuddo (blind) Martin Coelho, sister of Basil Coelho father of Fr. Martin Coelho / famous for coffee plantation and bankruptcy. This wife died on 24th April 1860 after childbirth. The child died on 23.4.60. The sons of this marriage are Casmir married Sabina daughter of Alex Mascarenhas of Falnir, George died 25.9.1880 in the coffee estate of Fr. Martin Coelho at Balnur. Daughters Juliana married to Postmaster Salvador Souza settled in Udipi. Regina married to Juze Padival son of Lorsu Padival whose daughter Mornel is the second wife of Felix Saldanha. Juana unmarried.
Felix Saldanha had already bought the Karambar property on 21.8.1854 and the house and gardens at Karangalpady on 9.5.1886 married Mornel/Mary Magdelena daughter of Lorsu Padiwala of Codialbail on Thursday 23rd August 1860 and was reached to the house of Felix Saldanha on Friday 24.5.60. Children of this marriage were 1. Camillo Norbert born on Wednesday 6th June 1861 in the year Durmuki. He went to Madras on Sunday 19.8.1880 by the old bar at Kudroli1. I went upto the Steamer (first time at sea) and reached Madras on Tuesday 23.9.1880. He was employed on board emigrant ships to Mauritius for two years and then for four years in Penang and then went to England and is practicing there for the last 8 years. 2. Lawrence Martin was born on Monday, 23rd Feb 1863 at 5:30PM is an Fr H like Camillo and married Thomas Noronha's daughter Catherine and is employed in Government Telegraphs Bombay. Was in Mangalore, Tellicherry and Calicut. 3. Joseph Manuel was born 28th June and was anointed with holy oils on 4th Sept 1866. Passed B.A. in 1889, married Seraphine, daughter of Munsiff Jose Lobo. (b 15.12.1873. m 20.10.1897. d 25.7.1898). Regina Maussi (Padivala) widow of Ranka Saldanha held the child for Baptism. Daughter Marcellina born 13.2.1875 married Frederick Saldanha son of Peter Saldanha of Karwar on 20.10.97. Fredrick died 1901 had two daughters Alice and Sybil. Felix Saldanha DOB 27.4.1817
Felix Saldanha was buried in Codialbail chapel on Saturday 22.9.88 just inside the door of the right hand verandah (Balcony) in which the pulpit steps are. Age 71 years, 4 months, 26 days.
Another son of Felix, Mark worked in the Govt. Telegraphs, married twice. First a Goan of Portuguese descent, had no children, 2nd an Anglo-indian and had 4 children Felix, Magdalen, Teresa and Joseph. The first wife adopted a girl Mary who later married and lived in Calcutta. Felix passed into the ICS and was in India. After WWII he went to England.
The eldest son Victor lived at 23 Rest House Road. (The author adds - The house where my friend Jawahar Mathias grew up).

1. The Bar at Kudroli: This is the part in Mangalore where the river enters the sea. Steamers used to come up to a sort of underwater hill called the bar. Steamers used to stop on the other side and take on passengers who were ferried between the steamer and shore by launches and row boats. This explanation was given by George L. Ferris, the author's father.

General Notes: Initially employed in the Taluk treasury at Shimoga, AJ Saldanha became famous as a pioneer in the coffee curing industry. He set up the firm of "A.J. Saldanha & Sons", the first coffee curing facility in India. Prior to that, the mainly European coffee planters sent their produce to Britain for processing.
