6. Rita PEREIRA (George³, Francis¹).

Rita married Francis ARANHA, son of Joachim ARANHA and Sabina MIRANDA. Francis was born in 1828 and died in 1911 at age 83.

7. Dr. Joseph Michael PEREIRA (George³, Francis¹) was born on Jul 22, 1857 in Mangaluru, Karnataka, India and died on Apr 22, 1949 in Byculla, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India at age 91.

General Notes: Not much is known about the early life of Dr. Joseph Pereira. He presumably had his early education at Rosario parish school and then also studied at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. He must have then proceeded to either Madras or Bombay (probably Bombay) for his medical studies. He was one of the very first Mangaloreans to secure a medical degree. For his higher education he proceeded to the University of Edinburgh. He was probably only the second Mangalorean to achieve a Bachelors of Medicine and Master of Chirurgy (an archaic word for surgery). He was said to have been a classmate of the famous author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and graduated from the University of Edinburgh around 1881. He may have practiced medicine in Britain before he returned to India. To fund his education, he had reportedly borrowed a large sum of money and was determined to pay this back before he got married. Upon returning from Britain, he set up two clinics in Bombay. One dispensing medicine to the rich, whilst a separate one dispensing medicine to the poor.
