General Notes: After schooling in Meerut, Agra and Cannanore Leslie joined St. Joseph's College, Bangalore but left soon after to join the army. He was commissioned in 1940 as a second Lieutenant and saw active service during WWII on the North Western Frontier Province. By 1947 he was a Lt. Colonel in command of an infantry battalion and earned the Commander-in-Chief's commendation for his leadership and devotion to duty during the terrible holocaust following the partition of the sub-continent. During the operations in Jammu & Kashmir in 1948 he was mentioned in Dispatches for his gallantry in the field.
After graduating from Staff College, Wellington he held a number of staff and command appointments. In 1965 in command of an infantry brigade he captured the Pakistani stronghold of Barki on the ICHOGIL canal. He was awarded the ATI VISHIST SEVA Medal (AVSM) for distinguished service of an exceptional order.
He was the first Mangalorean to attain the rank of Brigadier. He retired in 1969 and settled down in Bangalore and engaged himself in social and welfare activities. He was president of the KCA (1974-78)

On behalf of the family, I thank all of you for being here today, to honor Daddy.
The loss was so sudden that we are all still struggling to come to terms with his absence.
Daddy's life reminds me of the verse:
Lives of great men all remind us,
We can make our lives sublime,
And departing, leave behind us,
Footprints on the sands of time .
Daddy, in his own simple and humble way, was a great man.
He was great in his boyhood, when he was a reknowned hockey player and his name is still on the merit board of his old school, St. Joseph's, Bangalore.
Great as a young army officer, when he saw action in the 2nd World War in Alexandria, and again in Gorez , highest heights ever fought, in the first war with Pakistan.
I still remember our childhood days, when he used to fascinate us with stories of gunshot wounds and bravery on the front.
Also, tall stories of eating grapes in the vineyards of Italy and lying in the sun, so that the grapes turned to wine in the stomach!!
Maybe, it was memories of those days, which prompted him to own a vineyard in Hyderabad, and also fueled his passion for wine making!
Great, in his choice of a wife. Mummy was the loveliest girl in all of Bombay, and after one look at her swinging on the gate of her parent's house, his mind was made up. He insisted on marrying only her and all his life he loved and cherished his lovely Marie.
No man, has ever loved his wife more. He indulged her every whim, and tolerated her weaknesses, though they were few, with profound patience.
He was her pillar of strength through all the trials and tribulations of setting up and running the school. Especially during the Annual Drama, he was the only one who could keep her calm!!
Great, as a father to all of us, his seven children. If he had favorites, he never showed it. He made each one of us feel special and loved. I don't recall a single harsh word from him, while growing up. Our home was always a haven of peace.
Both our parents made so many sacrifices to bring us up. All those long years of separation and forward area postings, being away from the family, was not easy, but he bore it with fortitude and was never bitter.
He accepted both good fortune and bad with equanimity. He was always occupied and enjoyed fishing, golfing and wine making. Simple living and good education, was what he stressed upon. All of us studied hard and tried to live up to his expectations.
Daddy, was great in the way he accepted every spouse, as we all got married one by one , as his own. Not even once, by word or action, did he ever hurt anyone's feelings. All our spouses felt equally loved by him.
Daddy took great pride in all our achievements. I can still see the twinkle in his eye and his sweet smile, whenever Mummy boasted that one of us had achieved an honor, or done something great.
He was the greatest grandfather to his 14 grandchildren. They loved him dearly, enjoyed his visits and were desolate when he left. He always left fond memories and lovely sketches, during every visit.
When Daddy passed away and all the condolences were pouring in, all his nieces and nephews said one thing in common, that he was their "Favorite Uncle" and they genuinely meant it. Uncle Denzyl, they said, was always loving, non interfering and great fun!!
How do we console Mummy, who has lost her life partner of 55 years? We can only say he is with you and all of us in spirit and participating in whatever we do.
One consolation we all have, is that he went peacefully with no suffering.
A great man who had a great death.
As Mummy say's, how many men are there in this world like him, who did not have a single enemy and not harmed a single soul?
Truly a great man!

General Notes: George Ferris was born in Bangalore at the Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospital. He as christened George Lawrence Francis and later Benedict after the saint-name. [George, after his father, Lawrence after his maternal grandfather and Francis after his paternal grandfather. He had his early education at St. John's School, Meerut where his father was posted at the Military Hospital.
He, along with his two elder brothers, Leslie and Denzyl, used to walk 2 miles each way. On occasion, the would get dropped by tonga, a horse drawn carriage where the passengers sat with their backs to the horse and driver, facing the road behind. This tonga used to bring the nurses to the hospital and if they were ready in time, they got a lift to school.
On the transfer of his father to Lucknow, no suitable school was found for the boys so George (and his brothers) were put into boarding school at St. Peter's College, Agra at the age of 8 years. He soon learned to look after himself, dress himself, polish his shoes, etc. For vacations they went to Lucknow. When returning to school, either their mother would accompany them or their father would depute one of the hospital staff to see that they reached safely. It was as St. Peter's College that he spent 4 years. After that at no school or college did he spend more than 2 years. He had a relatively good time here as all the boys in the boarding house were friendly and helpful. Here they played several games and were also taught how to swim. Once a month they were taken to see some historical place.
Later his father was transferred to Cannanore and he was admitted to St. Michael's where he studied for 2 years - one year as a boarder to complete his middle school examination as his father was transferred after a year to Bangalore. In Bangalore he was admitted in St. Joseph's Boys High School where he did his Junior Cambridge, Senior Cambridge and High School Examination. After completing his high school he was sent to St. Aloysius College in Mangalore for his intermediate after which he returned to Bangalore and completed a B.A degree in Mathematics. Since he wanted to do law and there was no law college in Bangalore at the time, he went to Madras and joined the Madras Law College.
He was a good sportsman in school and college and won several trophies. In Madras, he was the inter-collegiate champion in tennis. He also excelled in hockey and athletics.
After graduating from law school, George returned to Bangalore, enrolled in the High Court of Karnataka and joined the Chambers of F.X. Xavier, a leading criminal lawyer at the time. Not liking criminal law much, George gradually moved over to the Civil side and opened his own Chambers in partnership with another colleague who had been his classmate at St. Joseph's College as well as Madras Law College. Later the partnership split up as his colleague moved to Bhadravati where his wife setup her medical practice.
In May 1960, George married Yvonne Saldanha, the eldest daughter of Stanislaus and Marie Saldanha (nee Vas). They were married at St. Patrick's Church in Bangalore. He had four children who all studied in Bangalore and are now settled in Bangalore, Bombay and the US.
After all his children were married and had settled down, George gradually curtailed his practice and for exercise joined the Bangalore Golf Club and started playing golf. In this game too he excelled and won several trophies. George is widely travelled having visited Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, England and USA where two of his children have settled.

Parmeela Mediratta M.D., surgeon, wife, devoted mother and grandmother, died on 23 March 2022, aged 94.
The four of us children would sit in the ground floor café of Huntington Hospital while our mom did her Saturday morning rounds. Happily tucking into breakfast, we had little idea what our "Mama" actually did. Over the years we caught glimpses into her life as a doctor through the stories we heard
from her patients and their partners, children, and siblings. Stories about the doctor who delivered their children, helped them battle cancer, and who supported them in countless other ways. They talked about the steady, deeply capable, and reassuring presence this woman had been for their families. She was that presence for our family as well.
History is full of individuals who have forged the path for others to follow. Some were larger than life, their names memorialized in the history books, if not splashed on landmarks, for future generations to witness. But countless more shunned the limelight. They were just doing something that they cared deeply about. And some of those people touched and bettered the lives of thousands. She was one of those people.
Few who witnessed her early days would have thought that, in her unassuming way, she would rebel against expectations. Pamela Mavis Marie Ferris was born on May 22, 1927 in India, one of eight children of Mabel Ferris and George Julian Ferris, a highly decorated surgeon in the then British Army. India was relatively stable at that time. World War I had ended nine years earlier and the subcontinent was still under British colonial rule. Her family moved several times as her father rotated through postings before settling down in Bangalore, then the serene, peaceful and temperate capital city of India's southern Karnataka state. She excelled at the Sacred Heart European Girls' High School and again in her collegiate studies at the Catholic Educational Council of South India. A collegiate degree was a little unusual when many of her peers were already married and starting families. But, by then, she knew two things about herself: she loved dogs and she would become a physician.
That drive took her to the University of Madras, on the Bay of Bengal in eastern India, where she received her medical certification in 1952. She would spend her postgraduate medical residency years in Madras and Bangalore when, in 1955, she was offered a four-year residency program at the Sisters of
Charity Hospital In Buffalo NY, where she began to specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Physicians occupy the pinnacle of the medical world which, in the 1950s, was the domain of white men, and she experienced a level of casual, blatant sexism and racism that even today is hard to comprehend. On May 4, 1958, the Buffalo Courier Express ran a well-intentioned story about her, "Indian 'Medicine Woman' Disappoints Little Pale Faces". Quietly aghast, she made a point of keeping that article.
Returning to India in 1959, she spent the next decade as a practicing physician in Bangalore. Still single in her 30's, she shrugged off the increasing inquiries from family and friends. She was doing what she loved with her faithful dog, Stumpy, and a wide circle of friends, family and her favorite novels for ecompany. She was content. In a few years she hoped to help establish a Catholic hospital and eventually a medical school in Bangalore where she could share techniques learned in the United States. Then life, as it does, threw a curveball.
Asked one day to drop in on the home of a nearby Air Force officer's wife, she met Om Prakash Mediratta. A rising star in the Indian Ministry of Defense, he was stationed in Bangalore establishing a prestigious aeronautical research center. That chance meeting changed both of their lives. He feigned a hand injury the next day to meet her again, courtship and marriage soon followed. Their union was emblematic of their independent spirits: it was a convention-defying marriage across religion, region, language, and caste. But not all conventions could be ignored. In August 1964, she changed her first name and officially renounced her Catholic practice. They married the following month.
The Indian subcontinent had ceased to be a British colony almost 20 years earlier, a period of great turmoil as two new countries came into being but also a time of great national pride. Changing her name, from Pamela to Parmeela, was a decision not only to recognize her husband's Hindu traditions but also to embrace that pride in what India could be. Yet in 1968, with three children, they made a difficult decision to emigrate. India under the rule of Indira Gandhi was becoming increasingly undemocratic and, having seen what the United States had to offer, they turned away from flourishing careers in the hopes of a brighter future for their children.
The transition to a new life in the United States went as planned at first. Prakash was a visiting professor at the University of Virginia before settling down with his growing family on Long Island, working at Reeves Instrument Corporation, a Cold War manufacturer of computer and radar systems for the United States. When Reeves relocated its operations out of state and closed the Long Island division, they decided not to move. Initially, they were optimistic about employment opportunities. But the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971 changed the equation of what would be possible for him as an Indian
aerospace engineer. American support for Pakistan pushed India to align with the Soviet Union and, almost overnight, his employment opportunities dried up. And so, they made a difficult decision for a couple of their generation: Prakash would stay home with the children while she resumed her medical practice and assumed the role of the breadwinner.
That was easier said than done. Women surgeons were a rarity in the 1970's and Parmeela was the one of the first, possibly the first, female OB-GYN in New York, so she endured endless casual, commonplace sexism. It was to be expected from her male colleagues, who frequently overlooked her. But even nurses, at least those who didn't know her, would walk into the examining room and look around blankly for the doctor. However, there was only one constituency that mattered - her patients. As word of mouth spread that there was a woman doctor in the area, they began to flock to her. Slowly at first, and then in a flood. Those were long and grueling years; the fact that so many babies tend to come in the middle of the night just came with the job. But it didn't matter, she was doing what she loved. Patients spoke of her as a caring, loving Doctor who took the time to listen to their concerns and who, as a mother, had shared their same experiences. Hospital staff appreciated her no-nonsense, practical style; an OR Nurse who worked with her for 20 years once said "She came in, she knew exactly what she was doing, and she was so nice to all of us, a rarity in those days. We all loved working with her." She built a thriving practice, delivering thousands of babies, becoming one of the most accomplished surgeons in the tri-state area before transitioning to become a preeminent woman's cancer specialist.
Over the following decades, she and Prakash stayed in their Long Island home and raised their four children. Their eldest two children, the twins, Ajata and Kavitha, are now 56. Ajata, after spending a decade at Bear Stearns running an international banking team is now President of Greylock Capital Management, an investment firm focused on the global emerging markets. Kavitha spent much of her career working to advance educational opportunities for children of color in the US, first as a classroom teacher and then through grassroots organizing, policy development and philanthropy, and is now the founding executive director of the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity at Columbia University. Sharmeela, 55, a social worker, has spent her career in social services in New York City, creating and implementing supportive services in early childhood, youth development, the foster care system and in under-resourced communities, she is a Vice-President at Graham Windham, an organization that traces its roots to the 1806 orphanage established by Eliza Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton's widow. And Bharat, 51, spent more than a decade at Google as Distinguished Engineer before leaving to co-found AltSchool, then to serve as Chief Technology Officer at Dropbox before, most recently, diving into the cryptocurrency universe as an Engineering Fellow at Coinbase. Between the four children there are now 9 grandchildren who were a source of great joy for her.
Peaceful in her retirement, she recognized the dementia for what it was when it began to creep up on her five years ago, in all its quiet, implacable horror. But there was nothing to do. She stopped driving, lost interest in her beloved books and eventually moved into assisted living for the extra support she required. But she never lost sight of who she was. Two years into the pandemic, as aides in her living facility bustled around her in their protective gear, her mind would transport her back to the hospital. And, in her mind, she was masking up and heading to the delivery room, ready to introduce another baby to the world. She was content.

I stand here this afternoon to pay homage to my mother Yvonne Ferri
s. I am her eldest daughter Shirin and I represent my father George Ferris, my brothers Anil and Santosh and my sister Kamini, our spouses and her ten grandchildren
There are so many things to say about mum - and all of them are wonderful. Devoted wife, beloved mother, darling grandmother. She was the rock upon whose steadfastness our family was built. Now we are floundering.
Dad has lost the love of his life, his companion of 44 years. She spoiled him rotten, he magnificently accepted it as his due. We have lost our primary sustainer, supporter and friend. Life for all of us will not be the same again.
In respect to her own courage and patience, we are determined to reach within ourselves and find the strength to go on and to take care of our father - that would have been mum's dearest wish and it is the least we could do to honor her memory.
Mum was always patient, sensitive and loving. When we hurt she hurt and provided thoughtful, balanced advice. When all was right with our world she threw herself into celebrating it. After giving us a golden childhood that we can cherish and talk endlessly about to our own children, she was the lodestone that made Bangalore the choice for every holiday. Trips home were filled with joy - our favorite dishes, planning happy outings, catching up with the city of our youth.
Mum loved children. Her ten grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life and she was so proud of their every small achievement. So much love, so much patience, so much sheer warmth that my own children often ask me, "Why can't you be like Gran? She never gets angry"
Mum always proclaimed she was old fashioned and not computer savvy But when she realized that emails would help her to keep in touch with all her children on literally a daily basis, she overcame her misgivings and soon mastered the basics. She then became the central post office of the family. Each of us felt a special joy to see a letter from mum in our inboxes. Her letters were like her full of warmth and care, while providing rich details of family and friends. There'll be no more emails from mum for us now.
Mum was a gifted teacher who spent over 15 years at Sophia High School and then went on to teach at Bishop Cotton's Girls School. She imparted her own love for English Literature to thousands of Bangalore girls, including my sister and me. All her students held her in very high esteem. Any shopping trip with her to Commercial Street or Brigade Road would be punctuated with delighted greetings from her ex-students, who would regale her with stories of their current careers, husbands and children.
In fact, one day in hospital when she was very sick 1 quoted these lines to her "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light." Then 1 said, "Mum, these lines by John Donne should be our motto." Pat came her reply: "The poem is not by John Donne, It's by Dylan Thomas". 1 felt like 1 was back in high school when mum was not just my mother but my English teacher too,
Fiercely independent; when mum became ill she was determined to put up a good fight and come through with flying colors to resume her quiet and contented life with Dad. She was firmly resolved not to become a focus of sympathy but to keep the news private till she was well again.
Alas this was not to be. Much as we loved her, it seemed God loved her more. He could not wait too long before she entered Heaven's door Even during her 13-day hospital stay, mum's spirit was never quenched. She was always even tempered and stoic, even when she couldn't do much and much was done to her.
And even when she was most sick mum's generosity was amazing. The morning that she was taken to hospital she dictated a letter to my father stating her wishes that every possible organ be donated to those in need and that even her body be used for research. Even though this was not finally possible it is testimony to a spirit that always put others before self. No wonder then that her doctors said she was remarkable, her nurses proclaimed that she was like a mother to them.
Mum was patience and grace personified right to her very last breath, Her body had faltered but her mind and spirit stayed intact. She chatted to us and she gave us advice - and while we railed against fate, she was calm and accepting. My sister and 1 are so grateful and privileged to have been with her on her last day. Her end was very peaceful. At 1:20pm. on the 24th of November she passed from a deep earthly sleep into eternal rest. She was only 68 years young. We are devastated. But while we mourn her death, we must try not to forget to celebrate a life that was lived to the full.
A warm and sincere thank you goes out from our family to everyone who rushed to help us in our days of need and grief. And thank you to all of you here for being present as we entrust mum's soul to Almighty God. Our treasure is His treasure now.
Though Mum, has left us physically, the memory of her love and her laughter will live on in our minds, hearts and lives forever. We love you mum.
