1. Jose VAS was born circa 1710 in Pandevado, Chorao, Goa, India.

General Notes: Jose Vas emigrated to Mangalore in the 18th century from an island called Chorao in Goa. He and his entire family were amongst those arrested under the mandate of Tippu Sultan on the night of Ash Wednesday, 25th February, 1784. They were force marched to Seringapatam and only managed to escape when Seringapatam was captured on Tippu Sultans death in battle on 4th May 1799. Some of his descendants have changed their last name to Vaz.

Jose married Appolonia BRAGANZA.

   2    i. Sebastian VAS .

General Notes: Sebastian settled in Virajpet and is head of the Virajpet Vas Naik family. Virajpet in Coorg is home to a sizeable Catholic community who are of Mangalorean descent. Their forefathers were prisoners in Seringapatam who lacked the energy or desire to return to Mangalore after captivity terminated in 1999. There are also a community of Muslims whose ancestors are thought to have been Mangalorean Christians that were forcibly converted to Islam.
