2. Tashildar Manuel SEQUEIRA (John¹) was born circa 1840.

General Notes: Manuel Sequeira was a tahsildar-magistrate, one of the highest positions that could be attained by a native Indian in the 19th century.

Marian Saldanha, a painstaking 19th century historian of Mangalore and Canara, gives a graphic idea of the grandeur of these positions in this extract from his notes:

The tahsildar-magistrate was treated with the highest respect by the people, who addressed him as Rayaroo, and considerable power and prestige attached to his office. Government allowed him a bugler and an umbrella-carrier in addition to a large retinue of peons. Every time the tahsildar-magistrate attended the kutchery (court), a small procession was formed. The bugler led the procession and let off a blast at intervals, so that the town's people had ample notice of the approach of the august personage and could get ready to pay their customary respects to him. A large damask silk umbrella, embellished with gold lace and silver ornaments, was held by the umbrella-bearer high above the tahsildar-magistrate's person to keep the sun off him and to emphasize his importance. The entourage followed and the procession wended its way among the bowing populace until it arrived at the kutcherry building. Here the assembled clerks, vakeels, clients and others accorded him a suitable reception and he was ceremoniously conducted to his seat. There being no chair in those days, the seat was a 'masnad', a mattress covered with a rich carpet and surrounded with cushions. A punkah overhead was set swinging by a puller and two peons with large peacock-feather fans added their efforts to keep him cool and to augment his dignity.

+ 8    iii. Juliana Esperanca SEQUEIRA was born in 1870 and died in 1948 at age 78.

+ 9    iv. Emerciana SEQUEIRA was born in 1872 and died in 1948 at age 76.

+ 10    v. Pulcheria Magdalena Regina SEQUEIRA was born in 1875 and died in 1966 at age 91.

+ 11    vi. Catharine Mary SEQUEIRA was born in 1876 and died in 1949 at age 73.

+ 12    vii. Christine Victoria Regina SEQUEIRA was born in 1879 and died in 1957 at age 78.

   13    viii. John Anthony SEQUEIRA was born in 1883 and died in 1969 at age 86.

   14    ix. Albert Anthony SEQUEIRA was born in 1886.

Albert married Desidera MASCARENHAS.

+ 15    x. Aloysius Polycarp SEQUEIRA was born on Jan 28, 1889 and died on Jun 22, 1961 at age 72.

3. Maria SEQUEIRA (John¹) was born in 1842.

Maria married Custudio SUARES, son of Joseph SUARES and Martha SALDANHA. Custudio was born in 1832.

+ 18    iii. Marcelline SUARES was born in 1878 and died on Jul 6, 1938 at age 60.
