A Tribute to Dad
You know, for whatever reason as I grieve, my mind keeps going back to the sweep of my father's life as I knew it..... and my relationship with him. And the same powerful questions keep rising from the depths. I'd like to share a few:
Where would I be without my Dad, Frank Patrick Suares?
My Dad, who not once showed me anger and not once angered me across all those phases of my life...
My Dad, who could've easily overlooked the 5th of 5 children, but instead dubbed me his pot of gold and as a child took me along on trips everywhere. He ironed my clothes for school, college and my Swissair uniforms every morning, made me breakfast every morning till he instructed my husband before my wedding day to continue in the same vein. During the monsoons he was my weatherman with a 99% accuracy rate as I hated carrying an umbrella. He gave me haircuts right through my school years (albeit bad ones), but it was good just knowing he cared so much.
My Dad, who helped so many people with no strings attached and who, near to and far beyond our community, was revered for his impeccable sense of kindness and honesty.
My Dad, who achieved so much with unrivaled modesty. Besides rising up the ranks at the Bombay University, he was the Western Indian Champion for tennis and badminton, singles and doubles with his younger brother Freddie. He was the life of the party and the ladies would line up at weddings to dance with Dad...he was an incredible ballroom dancer.
So this is where my mind and spirit go as I think about the loss of this exceptional man, who lucky for us was also our Dad. I know he's blessing all of us now, especially my brother Keith who tirelessly cared for both my father and mother over the past 15 years. That alone speaks volumes for the kind of father Frank was, to raise a son who would care for his parents for so many years with such total devotion, and, true to our Dad, would accept no credit for it.
Without knowing it my Dad taught me more about relationships, parenting and spirituality than he'll ever know. But now Dad you're in a position to really hear how much you mean to me.

A true gentleman to the core, a devoted husband, a wonderful father a
nd an accomplished army officer of integrity and nobility.
These were the words of Maj. General George Lasrado at the funeral oration of Lt. Col. Jossie Soares on 26 Sept 2004; they were doubtless echoed by all who knew him.
Born and brought up in Bombay, Jossie was educated in that city's most prestigious Jesuit College - St. Xavier's. He was one of the first Indians to be commissioned in the Indian Army in 1944. He saw active service against the Japanese in Burma in World War II, in the liberation of Goa from the Portuguese in 1961 and in the wars against China and Pakistan in 1962 and 1965 respectively. As an officer of the 17th Artillery Brigade, his integrity and honor earned him numerous medals. He retired as the commandant of the prestigious Defence Security Corps. Cannanore. His officers and soldiers loved him so much that when he retired from Cannanore they said "Yeh saab chale gaya, ek jamana gaya hai", which translates as "Our commandant has left- an era has passed away".
The other feathers in hi cap were his dancing skills, his sportsmanship and his love of nature. Jossie, with his beloved wife Blossom in his arms would glide over the dance floor and it was a treat to watch them win all the dance competitions in the army clubs and messes. He was exquisite at the old waltz, fox trot and tango and was known as the Fred Astaire of Bangalore. He was an expert swimmer and won laurels at rifle-shooting as well. Quick witted and humorous, he was the Master of Ceremonies for many weddings in Bangalore. "Joss & Bloss" were very popular and highly loved. All of Bangalore shall miss him.
Jossie was a scion of the famous Shet Saldanha family of Mangalore and the accomplished Soare's of Bandra, Bombay. His beautiful and talented wife is a great granddaughter of "Sherry Bai" (Sabina Severina Britto nee Coelho), one of the wealthiest ladies of her time and a great philanthropist. Sherry Bai's parents, John Joseph and Mary Magdalene Coelho were the donors of Bishop's House, Codialbail \endash J.J. Coelho having built the Codialbail Chapel entirely at his own expense, having paid the enormous sum of Rs 60,000 in 1857. Sherry Bai inherited acres of land all over Mangalore, much of which she donated to charitable organizations.
Freida, Naresh and Anita have imbibed all the wonderful qualities of their parents \endash wit, humor, intelligence and a sense of accomplishment. Naresh is a B.Tech from IIT Madras and M.Tech from Canada. Freida is a former faculty member of the prestigious IIM (Indian Institute of Management) Bangalore, with a Master's degree and numerous publications to her credit. Anita is a B.Sc. gold medallist from Karnatak University.
Frieda is married to Placid Saldanha, a lawyer, and Anita to Bennet Mathias a planter. Both are based in Mangalore. Naresh and his wife Marilyn are in the US. Marilyn is a tax consultant.
Jossie and Blossom's grand children Mark, Michael, Marvin, Sarita, Christopher, Carl, Smitha and Tasha are all talented children.
This wonderful happy family miss their dad and granddad very much \endash much more than words can tell.

General Notes: Probably the ultimate honour for a person is his portrait being displayed at the nation's seat of power, the Parliament, alongside pictures of the giants of history such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru. Now a firebrand freedom-fighter couple from the exotic land of South Kanara is being posthumously accorded this privilege for the immeasurable part they played in wresting independence from our colonial oppressors.
An unlikely couple that enacted several roles during the course of their enriching lives, Joachim and Violet Alva were, among other things, parliamentarians, lawyers and journalists, avenues that were all utilised towards the socially relevant concerns of their age.
A firebrand orator, Joachim Alva graduated in Law from the Government Law College in Mumbai and left audiences spellbound with his extempore skills, winning along the way several prizes for oratory and debating. Finding his feet in the cauldron of the Indian freedom struggle, Alva delivered fiery speeches which won him the commendation of many prominent leaders. He served two terms in jail for a total of three years.
It was at the Government Law College that Alva met the shy and reticent Violet Hari, a protestant from Gujarat and possibly the most unlikely bride for Alva who was Catholic and diametrically opposite to Violet as far as personality traits were concerned. However, the couple cocked a snook at society by forging a successful alliance that lasted till Violet's demise in 1969, preceding her husband's death by ten years.
Mutually deciding that they could serve the cause of freedom better from the platform of journalism, the couple shifted their energies from legal matters to the world of incendiary letters. In 1943, Joachim started the newsmagazine "Forum", a publication that took a radical anti-establishment stand and strove to expose the ravages of British rule in India.
After Independence, Joachim was appointed Sheriff of Bombay in 1949. In 1950, he entered the Provisional Parliament of India. He was also elected to the Lok Sabha in 1952, 1957 and 1962 from South Kanara making him and Violet the first couple to be elected to Parliament under adult franchise. In 1952, Violet was elected to the Rajya Sabha and Joachim Alva to the Lok Sabha, both from Bombay State.
Violet also served as Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha in 1962 and was even in contention for the Presidential post in 1969 before being overlooked in favour of V.V. Giri.

Fr Denis was known as an affable priest and able administrator. He was also known for his fine sense of humour, not to forget his spiritual depth. A loving priest who had an insight into human beings, he loved his students and was kind and warm towards them. Scores of his students remember him fondly even today.
