Born in Codialbail (in the same house as his mother had been born), George started school at the age of six years at Milagres School. From the 4th to the 7th std. he studied at St. Aloysius College after which his studies were suspended as his father went bankrupt and could not afford the fees. For two years after that, his maternal uncle sent him to St. Joseph's College in Trichinopoly before abruptly withdrawing his sponsorship. George therefore went to Mumbai and got a job at M/S Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. in Parel.
While working, he applied for and passed the medical entrance exam and was admitted into the Sassoon Hospital, Pune on Sept 15, 1903. He opted for the military line and changed his name from FARIAS to FERRIS
George enlisted in the Indian Medical Department of the Indian Army at Pune on 15th September 1906. After serving for a year in the Military Hospital he was transferred to the Military Hospitals of various places, viz. Mhaw, Wellington, Lahore,and Delhi. In 1913, he was attached to the No. 7 Mountain Battery as the Medical Officer and sent along with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force to Cairo, Egypt. While he was there, World War I broke out. He was attached to the British Expeditionary Force "A" of the British Army and posted to England and later to France where he landed in Le Havre. In December 1915, he was attached to the 3rd Brigade Headquarters of the British Army and posted to the British Salonika Forces. He saw active duty in Flanders and Ypres where there was the heaviest shelling by the Germans. For distinguished service he received the 1914 Star, The British War Medal and The Victory Medal. It was here while attending to the wounded that he was awarded the Indian Order of Merit along with a citation that states "Sub-Assistant Surgeon Ferris attended to casualty after casualty under heavy shell fire with utter disregard to his personal safety". He was mentioned in dispatches and commended for valuable services rendered in the field on 25th September 1918. He was also awarded the Indian Distinguished Service Medal for my services during the war. He returned to India at the end of WW1 in 1919 where he continued to serve and was a recipient of The King George V Jubilee Medal 1910-35, The King George VI Coronation Medal 1937
Due for retirement in 1941, as the Second World War was raging, he was not permitted to retire until the termination of the war. For his services rendered during the second world war, He was awarded O.B.I (Order of British India) and the M.B.E. (Member of the British Empire) with the title of Sardar Bahadur. On retirement he settled down in Bangalore until his death on 15th May, 1967.

Scotland's oldest woman Lucy D'Abreu celebrated her 110th birthday by meeting the Queen at the Municipal Buildings. Mrs d'Abreu, who was given the middle name Victoria after the reigning monarch when she was born, chatted with the Queen for several minutes. After the presentation, the Royal party met 42 specially invited guests who included MSPs Sylvia Jackson and Keith Harding, Magnus Magnusson, Elspeth King - Director of The Smith, Dr Rennie McOwan - writer and broadcaster.
Mrs Lucy D'Abreu attributes her long life to "my customary sun-downer of brandy and dry ginger ale".

Lucy Victoria d'Abreu (May 24, 1892, India7 December 2005) was the oldest living person in the United Kingdom from April 2004 until her death in December 2005. She gained the title of "oldest person in Scotland" in June 2001, following the death of Agnes Kinnear, born November 1891, and the UK title in April 2004, following the April 28, 2004 death of Gladys Hawley, 112.
Born in Dharwar, India in 1892, Lucy Victoria d'Souza married Abundius d'Abreu, a surgeon, and moved to Northern Ireland, around 1913. In 1985, she moved to Scotland to be near one of her children. Her husband was a cousin-in-law of the Queen Mother, and she was visited by the British Royal Family in May 2002, for her 110th birthday.
Lucy holds the record for the oldest person born in India (whose age can be verified). After a fall at the age of 106, she moved to Annfield House nursing home in Stirling where she died peacefully on December 7, 2005, aged 113 years and 197 days. Historically, it should be noted that she was one of the last people, if not the last person, to have lived in India during Queen Victoria's reign, and also during the Great Famine of 1896-1902.

Oldest Briton dies aged 113
Britain's oldest person has died at the age of 113, it has been announced.
Great-great-grandmother Lucy d'Abreu passed away at a nursing home in Stirling on Wednesday after living through the reigns of five British monarchs, two World Wars and the turn of two centuries. She attributed her long life to her "customary sundowner of brandy and dry ginger ale".
According to the Guinness Book of Records, she became the oldest living person in Britain on April 28, 2004 at the age of 111 years 339 days.
A spokesman at Annfield House Nursing Home confirmed today that Mrs d'Abreu had died. He added that they could not comment further.
Mrs d'Abreu was born in southern India on May 24, 1892 as Lucy Victoria d'Souza and was given her middle name after the reigning monarch.
The mother of six's life began before the Russian revolution and when Britain still had a worldwide empire.
She lived most of her life in County Wexford, Ireland, where her husband, Dr Abundius Joseph d'Abreu, who was a cousin by marriage to the Queen Mother, established a surgical practice.
In the 1980s Mrs d'Abreu moved to Scotland to be closer to her family.
She enjoyed novels and read a newspaper daily.
In 2002 Mrs d'Abreu met the Queen, who was part way through her Golden Jubilee tour, at the Municipal Buildings in Stirling.
And a year later she was joined by her family and friends at the nursing home where they shared a "massive sponge cake" to celebrate her 111th birthday

General Notes: Probably the ultimate honour for a person is his portrait being displayed at the nation's seat of power, the Parliament, alongside pictures of the giants of history such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru. Now a firebrand freedom-fighter couple from the exotic land of South Kanara is being posthumously accorded this privilege for the immeasurable part they played in wresting independence from our colonial oppressors.
An unlikely couple that enacted several roles during the course of their enriching lives, Joachim and Violet Alva were, among other things, parliamentarians, lawyers and journalists, avenues that were all utilised towards the socially relevant concerns of their age.
A firebrand orator, Joachim Alva graduated in Law from the Government Law College in Mumbai and left audiences spellbound with his extempore skills, winning along the way several prizes for oratory and debating. Finding his feet in the cauldron of the Indian freedom struggle, Alva delivered fiery speeches which won him the commendation of many prominent leaders. He served two terms in jail for a total of three years.
It was at the Government Law College that Alva met the shy and reticent Violet Hari, a protestant from Gujarat and possibly the most unlikely bride for Alva who was Catholic and diametrically opposite to Violet as far as personality traits were concerned. However, the couple cocked a snook at society by forging a successful alliance that lasted till Violet's demise in 1969, preceding her husband's death by ten years.
Mutually deciding that they could serve the cause of freedom better from the platform of journalism, the couple shifted their energies from legal matters to the world of incendiary letters. In 1943, Joachim started the newsmagazine "Forum", a publication that took a radical anti-establishment stand and strove to expose the ravages of British rule in India.
After Independence, Joachim was appointed Sheriff of Bombay in 1949. In 1950, he entered the Provisional Parliament of India. He was also elected to the Lok Sabha in 1952, 1957 and 1962 from South Kanara making him and Violet the first couple to be elected to Parliament under adult franchise. In 1952, Violet was elected to the Rajya Sabha and Joachim Alva to the Lok Sabha, both from Bombay State.
Violet also served as Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha in 1962 and was even in contention for the Presidential post in 1969 before being overlooked in favour of V.V. Giri.
